"Nick Adams Sets His Second World Marathon Swimming Record"
ニック・アダムスが2つ目の世界記録を樹立
ニック・アダムスがジャージー島一周スイムで9時間51分という記録を出したため、世界マラソンスイムリストが今日書き換えられた。
マラソンスイムのベテランであり世界的に有名なChannel Swimmers Websiteの製作者であるアダムスは、歴史的な海峡スイマーであるアリソン・ストリーターが1989年に樹立した9時間53分という記録をわずかに2分更新した。

"Making Quantum Leaps in Ocean Swimming in New Zealand"
大躍進を遂げたニュージーランドのオーシャンスイム
New Zealand Ocean Water Seriesは、間違いなく世界中で最も素晴らしい大会の一つだ。主催者のスコット・ライスと彼の仲間は、ニュージーランドの代表的な数々の場所で、オープンウォーターの開催について画期的な現象をもたらした。

また面白い傾向として、参加者の56%が1年以内にウェットスーツを購入している。政治における自由党と保守党のように、ウェットスーツを着る人と着ない人との間には著しく意見の違いがあるが、双方ともオープンウォーターへの愛情は共有している。
ウェットスーツを着ても着なくても、経験者も初心者も、競争のためでも健康のためでも、若くても年をとっていても、New Zealand Ocean Water Seriesはみんなをオープンウォーターの世界へと引き込む。

Without a doubt, the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series is one of the greatest open water swimming events in the world. Race Director Scott Rice and his team at Quantum Events have broughts waves of professional event management experience, vision and passion to open water swimming and several iconic locations in New Zealand.
Combined with an easy registration process and sponsorship partnerships to clever marketing of the sport, Scott delivers and packages a great product - and quantifies his deliverables:
During the 2009-2010 season, the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series saw over 5,000 swimmers participate in six different locations that were broadcast 36 times. From participation by Olympic athletes to children doing a 200-meter Sovereign OceanKids event, there was something for everyone, including a Golden Goggles membership.
Scott provided a variety of interesting demographic information on his events:
59% of the participants were male and 41% were female with 95% of the participants judging the event either good or excellent in a post-race survey.
Age distribution among the women was fairly even across generations: 15% of the female participants were over the age of 50, 19% were under the age of 19, 23% were between the ages of 40-49, 23% were between the age of 30-39 and 20% were between the ages of 20-29. On the men's side, over half of the participants (54%) were between the ages of 30-49.
In an interesting indication of the trends of open water swimming, 56% of the participants had purchased a wetsuit during the last 12 months. Like liberals and conservatives in the political spectrum, the wetsuiters and traditionalists in the open water world have their stark differences of opinions, but they all share a love of the open water and the inherent challenges it brings.
Wetsuit or not, experienced or beginner, competitive or fitness, young or old, the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series brings every spectrum in the open water swimming world together in a innovative mix.

"Melissa Gorman Wins Another World Championship Title"
メリッサ・ゴーマンがもうひとつの世界選手権を制す

「とても辛かった。ビーチからスタートしてビーチに戻ってくるというレースは初めてだった。2位のルークはとても速くて、私は最後の砂浜のランに慣れていないのでとても心配だった。とにかくゴールまでできるだけ速く走った。とても疲れていて、あっという間だった。」と33歳のピーターは言っている。
24歳のルークは「最後のターンのときピーターの足元にいたが、彼は加速して離れていった。勝てたらよかったけれど、私は自分の結果に満足している。」と語った。
“Ocean racing Series World Championship race”は、4日間にわたって行われる MTN ネルソンマンデラ湾スプラッシュフェスティバルにおける、いろいろな種目のマリンスポーツの祭典の一部である。太陽が降り注ぐ海岸で戦うために世界中からトップアスリート集まる。

Melissa, who recently set a Commonwealth record in the 1500-meter freestyle at the recent Australian National Championships, won comfortably while placing third overall in 24:50. Brenda, a former Zimbabwean now competing for New Zealand, finished in 26:20 with Port Elizabeth teenager Carmell Billson third in 26:29. While she was up with the leading men’s pack at the back end of the first lap, "I was a bit shocked actually. I felt really good out there. The conditions were beautiful ? kinda similar to Australia really."
Melissa's victory was mirrored on the men's side by English Channel record holder and 3-time Olympian Petar Stoychev in a close battle with Durban’s Luke Nisbet after a mellow start on the two-loop course off Hobie Beach, known as the Sunshine Coast and water sports capital of South Africa.
Like the women's race, swimmers from three different countries finished 1-2-3 on the men's side with Petar crossing the line first in 24:28 followed by Luke in 24:40 and Australia’s Andrew Mosel third in 25:01.
"It was very hard. It is the first time that I’ve competed in a race that starts and finishes on the beach," said the 33-year-old although one could argue that he swam his record-breaking English Channel swim like a race, starting near the White Cliffs of Dover and ended in Cape Gris-Nez, France. "Luke, the second guy was very fast. I was worried about the run at the end ? I’m not used to that. I just went as fast as possible towards the end. I was tired, it was so quick."
24-year-old Luke said, "I was on Stoychev’s feet at the last turn, but then he accelerated and pulled a small gap. Winning would’ve been nice, but I’m happy with my result."
The Ocean Racing Series World Championship race is part of a multi-discipline international marine sporting extravaganza at the four-day MTN Nelson Mandela Bay Splash Festival where top athletes from around the world gathered to compete along the sun-drenched coast.

"Traveling Across The World in the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim"
ボスポラス海峡横断泳で世界を旅する
アジアとヨーロッパを結ぶ6.5kmのボスフォラス大陸横断泳(Bo?az?ci KitalararasiYarislari) は、2010年度は7月18日に行われる予定である。スイマー達はボスポラス海峡を南北に横断する。海峡は幅が非常に広いので、スイマー達はそれぞれいろいろなコースを泳ぐことになる。

The 6.5K Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim 2010 (Bogazici Kitalararasi Yarislari) from Asia to Europe will hold its 22nd race in July 18th. Swimmers cross the Bosphorus,from the north to the south. With the course so wide, the swimmer obviously decide to swim off in different directions.

"Setting the Stage in the Serpentine"

サーペンタイン湖は2012年ロンドンオリンピックで10キロのオープンウォーターとトライアスロンスイムパートの会場である
この二つの耐久レースを、ロンドン中心部にあるハイドパークで十万人の観客が見守るだろう。
ハイドパークにあるサーペンタイン湖は1730年にカロリン女王によって作られて以来、色とりどりの歴史を刻んできた。オリンピック会場は湖の東半分、ハイドパークとケンジントン公園の境目でありテムズ川へ地下水が流れ出るサーペンタイン橋までとなる。Serpentine（「蛇のような」）という名前は、その蛇行した流れに由来し、名高いサーペンタインスイミングクラブの本拠地でもある。
イギリス水泳連盟の代表者であり2008年世界オープンウォーターMan of the Yearにノミネートされたサム・グリーダムは、2008年北京オリンピックで10キロのオープンウォーターのコースを設定にたずさわった。そして2012年ロンドンオリンピックでのコース設定にも関わっている。
「これは私自身だけでなく、スカーバラの町、また私の愛するスポーツにとって非常に名誉なことです。」といつも謙虚で思いやりのあるサムはスカーバラ新聞に語っている。

The Serpentine is the venue for the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim and the swim leg of the triathlon at the 2012 London Olympics.
Both races of supreme endurance will be watched by upwards to 100,000 fans and spectators in the centre of London within the grounds of the famous Hyde Park.
The Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park has enjoyed a colorful history after it was created by Queen Caroline in 1730. The Olympic course will be held in the eastern half of the lake to the east of the Serpentine Bridge which marks the boundary between Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens and drains out by an underground flow to the River Thames. The Serpentine's names comes from its snakelike, curving shape and is home of the highly respected Serpentine Swimming Club.
Sam Greetham, a representative of British Swimming and nominee for the 2008 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year, not only helped design the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim course within a rowing basin at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, but he also is prepared the design of the open water course on the Serpentine for the 2012 London Olympics.
"It’s an unbelievable honor - not just for myself, but also for the town of Scarborough and for the sport I love," explained the always humble and thoughtful Sam to the Scarborough Evening News.
With an eye for detail, an utmost concern for the athletes and a keen sense of the global interest in open water swimming, Sam is open water swimming's equivalent of a movie set designer:

"Is Open Water Swimming the Next Big Idea for USA Swimming?"
オープンウォータースイムはアメリカの水泳界にとって新しいアイディアになるか？

アメリカ水泳界は、21世紀も継続して成長していくためのアイディアを模索している。

USA Swimming is looking for a bunch of Big Ideas for its membership to help it continue its success in the 21st century.

As Executive Director Chuck Wielgus explained, "USA Swimming is looking for your help to find the 'Big Idea' for the future of the organization and the sport and SwimNetwork will serve as the forum for comments, voting and the opportunity to submit your ideas. Past Big Ideas have been the creation of the Golden Goggle Awards, Duel in the Pool, the Club Development Division, Make a Splash, and more."
We were very happy to note that open water swimming is one of the possible Next Big Ideas for USA Swimming.
But they need your help in this public online discussion. Big Idea #6 is Open Water Growth where the proposal is to develop strategies that use open water swimming as a means for growing participation and membership, in a similar way to road/distance running (which draws in recreational runners as opposed to competitive track athletes).

"Barry Watson Feeling Young"

International Marathon Swimming Hall of Famer Barry Watson of England is back in training.
The energetic 71-year-old's new-found goal is to break the current record held by George Brunstad who is the oldest person to successfully swim the English Channel at the age of 70.
At the age of 26 in 1964, Barry set the English Channel record from France to England in 9 hours and 35 minuteshe age of 26. He also swam the English Channel in 15 hours and 21 minutes in 1968, in 13 hours and 56 minutes in 1969 and in 15 hours and 14 minutes in 1970. He was the British Long Distance Swimming Association champion in Lake Windermere in 1963 and 1964, the 1967 British Long Distance Swimming Association Loch Lomond champion, the British Long Distance Swimming Association 2-way Lake Windermere champion in 1966, 1967 and 1968, and the British Long Distance Swimming Association champion from Fleetwood to Morecambe in 1963, 1965, 1966 and 1967. He swam the length of Lake Windermere in England more than 20 times.
Now, at the age of 71, he is back in training with the goal of repeating his earlier Channel successes.

"Pieters and Stevenson Win One of the World’s Greatest Swims"

41-year-old former Olympic swimmer Deane Pieters won one of the world's greatest open water swimming events, the 19.7K Rottnest Channel Swim in Western Australia, in 4 hours 41 minutes.
"I came to swim hard and challenge for the win, and I’m absolutely rapt I was able to do it,” said Deanne, a former pool sprinter who represented Australia in the 200-meter freestyle at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
"Last year, I led until the 18K mark and got swallowed up at the end so I learnt my lesson for this year. To set a goal and see it come together like that is very rewarding."
Tim Hewitt, who won the event in 2001, was second in 4:43:47. A video of the race is here. 28-year-old New Zealander Louise Stevenson of New Zealand won the women's race in 5:07:21. "It hasn’t really sunk in yet ? it’s taken a lot of sacrifices the past three or four months so it’s satisfying to win. It was pretty rough out there. In the first 1000 meters, I got stung for buggery.".
Among the 2,300 swimmers who entered the water swimming solos and in teams, Team Aussie Bum with Simon Huitenga, Heidi Gan, Jarrad Lawford and Sean Noone was the first team across the line in 4:18:59. Jessica Barclay and Paul Laver were the first pair to complete the due team race in 4:50:24 as every swimmer had to deal with moderate to heavy swells.

"The Irish Enabler, Martin Cullen"

Martin Cullen has been the sturdy backbone of Irish marathon swimming since the 1990's as an observer, reporter, administrator and long-term visionary.
From 1990 to 2004, there was an average of one English Channel solo success a year. Ned Denison is clear about what caused the record of success.
"Martin made major contributions. In 2004 and 2005, he made at least three major contributions that had long-term impact in Ireland. He organized six-person channel relay teams: three in 2004 and five in 2005. His 8-mile Bofin Island Challenge started to catch the attention of local swimmers."
As a result, Irish marathon swimmers are now swimming the English Channel at an average rate of five per year since 2005. Ten completed the solo swim in 2009 and there are seventeen signed up for 2010.
Additionally, Swim Ireland has created a National Open Water Committee in order to promote and develop the sport of open water swimming in Ireland. As its Secretary/Communications Officer, Martin is at the core of this development. On the solo swim side, Martin continues to held support marathon swimmers, including those intrepid challenges of the Irish Channel.
A true hero...quietly and diligently supporting the sport.

"Susie Maroney, Splashing Around Still Doing Good"

International Marathon Swimming Hall of Famer Susie Maroney, who made a splash in the marathon swimming world in her prime, is once again making a splash at the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children’s Splash for Cash swimathon.
A frequent supporter of the Splash for Cash, Susie helps raise money for deaf children and blind children, "I'm absolutely delighted and honoured to be an ambassador for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children’s Splash for Cash swimathon. I look forward immensely to being there on the day and meeting everyone."
At 15, Susie swam the English Channel in a fast 8:29 in 1990. At 16, she set the world record for a double Channel crossing in 17:14. Susie did two other long-distance swims: Cuba to the USA in 23 hours 47 minutes and 200K from Mexico to Cuba in 30 hours 23 minutes.

17歳のAna Marcela CunhaがFINA 10KM Marathon Swimming World Cup(Maratona Internacional de Santos)で今日勝利しました。
波は穏やかで無風の中、Ana Marcelaは絶妙な判断で、オリンピック10kmチャンピオンのLarisa IlchenkoとアメリカのChloe Suttonを、残り1.1km地点の最後のブイを周ったところでかわしました。
「最後、体2つ分のリードをスプリントして奪い、ついにオリンピックチャンピオンのLarisaに勝てたわ」とAna Marcela。「私はいつも限界まで力を出し切るけれど、今回は自分自身のゴールも達成した。そして今度はカナダのワールドチャンピオンシップに向けて、死に物狂いでメダルを獲得出来るよう準備を整えるわ。10月まで続くその他のワールドカップレースも同様にがんばるわ。」
イタリアのMartina GrimaldiとAlice Francoが非常に僅差のスプリントの末、2位と3位になりました。
男子はものすごい接戦で、しばらく結果が出ないほどのレースでした。長時間の写真判定の結果、ロシアのEvgeny Drattsevの勝利と発表。レースのほとんどを引っ張った彼にふさわしい結果となりました。南アフリカのChad Hoが２位に入りました。

10kmという距離なのにゴールはものすごい接戦です。北京オリンピックの10kmもそうでしたが、2時間くらい泳いでいてずっと気を抜けないんですね。こりゃすごい！

17-year-old Ana Marcela Cunha won today's FINA 10KM Marathon Swimming World Cup (Maratona Internacional de Santos - Trophy Renata Agondi).
Ana Marcela played her cards right, taking over after the last turn buoy with 1.1K to go from Olympic 10K champion Larisa Ilchenko and American Chloe Sutton under calm seas with no wind.
"In the end, I sprinted to a two-body advantage and finally defeated the Olympic champion, Larisa," said Ana Marcela. I always hit the limit, but this time I achieved my goal. Now I will prepare myself well for the World Championships in Canada where I am going to strive for a medal - as well as all the other World Cup races until October."
Italy's Martina Grimaldi and and Alice Franco finished second and third in an extremely tight sprint to the finish.
The men's race was so close and so hotly contested that it took time to determine the final results. After a lengthy review of the photo-finish, the officials awarded the victory to Russia's Evgeny Drattsev - which seemed deserving since he had led the pack for much of the race. Chad Ho of South Africa finished second.

女子の出場選手は41名。2008年北京五輪でトップ5に入ったLarisa Ilchenko選手、Angela Maurer選手、ブラジルの若手Ana Marcela Cunha選手の3名をはじめ、北京五輪に出場した選手が9名がいます。
男子の出場選手41名のうち、五輪経験者は7名。そして猛烈なハングリー精神を持ったアグレッシブなスイマーたちがロンドン代表を目指してレースに挑みます。
レースのおこなわれる日曜日の予報は、スタート時が、晴れ、気温は30℃前後、湿度高め。ゴール時の昼過ぎは雷雨が予想されます。

The professional open water swimming superstars from 19 countries (Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Switzerland, Ukraine, USA and Venezuela) have gathered in Santos, Brazil to compete in the first FINA 10KM Marathon Swim World Cup race of 2010.
On the 41 women, nine 2008 10K Olympians are entered, including 3 of the top 5 swimmers in Beijing: Larisa Ilchenko, Angela Maurer and Brazil's young Ana Marcela Cunha.
Of the 41 men in the field, there are seven Olympians and a whole lot of hungry, aggressive swimmers ready to make their mark in this London Olympics quadrennial.
The swimmers are expected to start the race on Sunday under sunny, hot and humid weather - 30°C - and may end the race around mid-day under thunderstorms and rain.
The race will be available on Santa Cecilia TV live online starting at 10:00 am Santos, Brazil time on Sunday morning. The men will start at 10 am and the women will start 10 minutes later. Click here and watch live by clicking on the Portuguese ("clique aqui e assista ao vivo").

"Jamie Patrick’s Unprecedented Three-way Crossing of Lake Tahoe"

Jamie Patrick of San Francisco will attempt an unprecedented triple crossing of Lake Tahoe in August 2010.
The courageous Triple Tahoe swim is a 66-mile (106K) three-way crossing of Lake Tahoe by the former All-American swimmer from the University of Hawaii who is a highly successful endurance athlete.
Besides an English Channel relay under his belt, he had done a quadruple Ironman Triathlon, a Triple Ironman, over 50 open water swims, ultra-marathon runs and over 75 triathlons.
Lake Tahoe sits between the states of Nevada and California at 1,897 meters (6,225 feet) altitude where Jamie will have to bear 12.7-15.5°C cold water (55-60°F) water for over 30 hours.
At altitude, in cold water swimming, through the night and against the 2-3 foot waves generated by the high mountain winds, Jamie will face incredible obstacles, but his mental and physical preparations and other ultra-marathon experiences will serve him well as he plans to join the open water swimming legends who have previously conquered Lake Tahoe.

"Keri-Anne Payne, One Cool Competitor, Headlines the Midmar Mile"
Keri-Anne（オリンピック10キロマラソンスイムの銀メダリスト）が、南アフリカで行われる第37回Halfway Toyota Midmar Mileに出場します。このレースでは彼女が主役となりそうです。

Among the nearly 20,000 swimmers who will be competing in the 37th Halfway Toyota Midmar Mile in South Africa, world champion and Olympic 10K Marathon Swim silver medalist Keri-Anne Payne (see below) is the female headliner in what will be one of the most competitive races in the history of one of the world's top open water competitions.
Keri-Anne, who is on a very busy schedule flying from England to Brazil to South Africa, is the defending Midmar Mile champion and is one of the growing number of foreigners who want to take part in the world's largest competitive open water swim near Howick in Kwa Zulu Natal, the Kingdom of the Zulu.
Keri-Anne will face her Midmar Mile rival Nadine Pastor of Germany who posted the fastest last 400 meter in last year's race despite having swum the 5K and 10K races in the preceding 72 hours. Nadine also upset Olympic 10K Marathon Swim gold medalist Larisa Ilchenko in the 2009 British Gas Great North Swim, so it should be an outstanding race this year.
British National Open Water Swimming Performance Director Mark Perry, who is bringing down a formidable British team to South Africa, said "British Swimming are excited to be racing in one of the most famous open water races in the world. It’s a great opportunity for our athletes to race in warm weather early in the year, and we are looking forward to both the experience and the South African hospitality. The team is a mixture of experienced world-class internationals and emerging young talent. Whilst the team are all going to be racing in their heaviest training period, we still expect them to race tough and step up to the bar."

"Bermuda Round the Sound Swim in 2010"
2008年World Open Warter Swimming のMan of the yearであるRandy Nuttから、第20回Bermuda Round the Sound Swimについての発表があった。
日程は10月17日、種目は0.8km、2km、4km、7.25km、10kmの5種目。
「バミューダはオープンウォーターの会場として非常に美しい場所です。5つの種目があるので誰にでも参加できますよ。」とRandy

Randy Nutt, the 2008 World Open Water Swimming Man of the Year announced the dates of the always wonderful 20th Annual Bermuda Round the Sound Swim.
The Bermuda Round the Sound Swim will be held on October 17th and will include 0.8K, 2K, 4K, 7.25K and 10K races.
Randy says, "Bermuda offers one of the most beautiful destinations in open water swimming and because five different distances are offered, there is an event for everyone. Perfect water temperature averaging 78°F (°C), clear waters in the enclosed and picturesque Harrington Sound, and a crew of volunteers make this an event to put on your calendar."
